Just a few minutes drive pass the Geyserland, we found Gulfoss!
This majestic waterfall is loud:) The water plummets 32 meters down in two stages into the beautiful canyon.
You can get pretty close to the water, as you can see.
In the first part of the 20th century, some investors were trying to harness the power of the waterfall and tried to construct a power plant in the area. They weren't able to buy the land, but they were able to rent it out. Sigriður Tómasdóttir, daughter of the farmer who owned the land around it fought really hard against any sort of construction.
She hired a lawyer and for years was fighting for it in court. Unfortunately, she lost, but whoever was in charge of the rental failed to pay the rental fees and so the waterfall was given back to the farmer.
Then in the 1940s', the grandson of the farmer bought the waterfall from the farmer and sold it to the government. And the government decided that they probably should work really hard to preserve this place of beauty. And so in 1979 it was designated as nature reserve and we can now enjoy it for free:)
The sun came out while we were at the waterfall, and we suddenly forgot that it was windy and freezing:)
We all loved seeing this place. Go early, to beat the crowds:)
Lyana.
