So...scary story. We tried to find a glacier. I had all the instructions about how to find an easy-accessable one from the main road and without paying for the tour.
And somehow we took the wrong turn. The road looked like a gravel road going into the mountains, but we thought it would just stay that way and we'd just have to bump our way through to the glacier. I mean, it's Iceland after all. Oh, I have to mention that on the dashboard of our rental car, there was a big yellow sticker warning us to NOT go on F-roads which were these smaller roads around the country, mostly in the mountains. We still weren't sure what in the world was so bad about F-roads. And here we were going up into the mountains on a bumpy road, in a tiny economy rental car, over the big ridges cut out by running mountain water. Yeah...it didn't look good, so after about a kilometer of this crazy driving we decided that this was not right. So we had to turn around.
And it's a good thing we did because just seconds later this huge monster truck looking thing started coming down that road right behind us with crazy speed:)) It all turned out to be okay at the end, but we were all quite nervous we'd come back down from that road with a damaged undercarriage or something. That was on our way east towards Vik.
SO...on the way back from Vik we kept looking again for a turn off towards the Myrdalsjokull glacier and we found it! We parked and followed a string of people walking towards the glacier (about 15 minutes).
Here is the first view of the glacier.
Does it look a bit disappointing? Not what you expected?
Yeah...this is not the glacier-blue that I hoped for but I guess there was no chance to see any of that blue without an organized tour OR driving a bit further east away from our base. Oh well.
It was still very amazing to see this "monstrosity", this glacier tongue despite the colors.
And I am glad we found it. This is the first glacier we had ever seen. Now we'll just have to go to Alaska to see more:)
That was the last stop on our long driving journey that day. And the weather was looking quite interesting. Here is a picture to prove:) It was pouring rain one minute and sunshine another.
We came home to our simple home cooked dinner and a hot tub. It was hard to make the kids go to sleep as it was light outside even at 10 pm! In fact, it felt like as we went to bed at 11 pm, woke up around 6:30 or 7 and it was ALREADY light, so basically the night was never really dark at all.
Lyana.
