We left this gem for last! Kerid crater!
We got a little bit lost trying to find it, let's just say that:) We had no GPS for this trip, so it was just us and the maps and the road signs and somehow the map was WRONG. Anyway, we found our way to it eventually.
This amazing caldera is around 3000 years old!
It is about 55 m (180 ft) deep. But the lake itself is around 7-14 meters deep, so relatively shallow. It was a bit slippery and difficult to get down to the lake itself and a few people were having a hard time.
With the right sort of sunlight, the color of the water becomes brilliantly aquamarine.
We were visiting here in the evening, so the lake took a different shade of blue that you can't capture with our camera. It was beautiful!
And so we managed to see as much as possible in the short three days that we had in Iceland. We know there is so much-much more. We wish we had two weeks to properly drive around the island and explore a few more really non-touristy parts of the country. Maybe someday.
Lyana.
