“Another Castle?”, you might ask.
Yes, but this time it’s in Wales and that makes it extra special! Conwy Castle is located…in Conwy. It’s a town in the Northern part of Wales, about an hour and fifteen minutes west of Liverpool. Conwy was built in the 1200s by king Edward I. This was at the time when he was trying to get control over all the modern-days British Isles territory. Edward I decided that he should build an “iron ring” of castles that would help with the Welsh uprisings that were still going strong. Other castles in that ring are Ruthin Castle, Caernarfon Castle, Beaumaris Castle, and Harlech Castle.
We loved this castle! Maybe it’s the fact that we were visiting around 4:30 pm so it was closing and not crowded. Or maybe it is because it is situated in a beautiful Welsh town. We are not sure, but this one was one of those cute castles that are easy to remember.
We walked to the entrance of the castle through the walled corridor above the city. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore here.
Yay, Grandma is in Wales!
That’s the castle from the inside.
And the view of the harbour from one of the windows.
We had to climb a lot of stairs to reach the top of each tower, not to mention watching our heads not to hit low ceiling.
I love this view of the three bridges—a modern one, an ancient one and a train one.
A picture of the dungeon.
Letting Katya be the photographer once in a while.
The view from one of the tallest watch towers.
Cute little boy who was determined to climb up every tower!
Who is this dude?
We went down to the waterfront but didn’t find much water as it was low tide. People were just hanging out there, eating fish and chips, chatting at the cafes. It was a beautiful evening.
We walked around a bit, then drove into town and got Turkish kebabs-some of the best we’d ever had (and first ones for Grandma)! Around 7 pm we started our drive back. It was a three and a half hour drive home, but with some unexpected road work and detours on A14, we didn’t get home till eleven.
What a LONG but fun day! We love Wales, it never disappoints us!
Lyana.
