Dead rats? Pulled teeth? Broken arrows? Medieval musical instruments? An old-old oak tree? You can find all of this at the annual Robin Good Festival, held at the famous Sherwood Forest. This year, we got a chance to go there and take Grandma along. We didn’t know exactly what to expect—entrance and shows are free, you just pay for activities, and parking, of course. The drive was not too bad—about and hour and a half.
The weather was moody a bit—lots of sunshine and then sudden quick rain. It was beautiful! The forest is the magnificent wooden area with centuries old trees…
The kids found another version of a “dead rat” game, this time it looked more like basketball.
Robert’s mom likes all sorts of musical instruments (as she is a music teacher) so we chatted for a while with this couple about medieval music and stuff.
And then we ran into this guy who had a booth set up to show and tell people how medieval medicine and dentistry was done. Katya got to demonstrate how to take an arrow out of her brother’s shoulder.
Real or fake? I know Robert would have enjoyed this exhibit
And, of course, they boys were looking forward to doing archery.

Lastly, meet Major Oak. Did you know that according to a legend, this is the tree that served as shelter to Robin Hood and his merry men? It has girth of 10 meters and is about 800-1000 year old. Incredible!!!
Oh yes, I didn’t take any pictures, but we also attended a jousting show here. It was not nearly as impressive as the one in Warwick, so we kind of left half way through it.
All in all, it was a fun day, and I am glad we did it once. We did not find Sheriff of Nottingham, fortunately.
That’s all for now. I have one more daytrip with Robert’s mom to tell you about. But it will have to wait till later (maybe tonight). Now we are off to the base library with the kids (Robert is in Norway as I write this).
