Watsons Go To Nova Scotia: Burncoat Head Park And Tidal Bore

Canada was calling our name so I found a great deal on tickets and we headed there for a week in June:)!

It took us a whole day to get to Nova Scotia! We had two layovers--one in Newark and another one in Toronto--before we reached, Halifax, NS in Canada! We arrived to Halifax sometimes in the late afternoon, got our rental car and drove north towards Truro. Yeah...I definitely thought of Truro in Cornwall (and Poldark;)).

Our hotel was actually a really cute and cozy place to stay with plenty of room for everyone. That first night, we got a take out pizza from this town and realized that although we were not in the middle of nowhere...life was a few paces slower here than where we live (and we do live in the south, technically;)). We spent almost an hour on the phone with T-mobile trying to get our phones to work as we were not able to use data/maps for awhile. But everything got sorted out and we finally got to sleep after a long day of traveling.

In the morning, we drove about an hour to our first stop--Burncoat Head Park at the famous Bay of Fundy.

Wow!! What a stunning place this was!

First we climbed up the observation tower to see the surrounding area.

And then we spent at least two hours exploring, walking, chatting, SINGING and just enjoying this beautiful time together.

So what is so special about this place? Well! Every 13 hours, the tide rushes through bringing 160 BILLION tones of water through the basin, thus creating the world's highest tide! So when the tide is low, you can literally walk on the ocean floor.

The tide height averages 55 ft.

We took a ton of pictures and as you can see all the kids actually wanted to take pictures here:).

Staged?? NO, this was a really funny "foot" we found:)

I love this picture a lot! It's hanging on my fridge, held up by a magnet--that's how much I love it.

This one is not too bad either:) Katya's radiant smile is everything!

And who is this rugged man?? Our handsome hiker/adventurer/singer/doctor Robert.

And here is our selfie for the win!

The second half of the day was full of adventures! We tried to find some decent lunch around, but the only thing we found was this General Store that didn't really have food we wanted (besides Ketchup chips;).

So we had to quickly drive a bit further to get food and then come back to Maintland, NS, where these awesome mud sliding Adventure Tours awaited for us.

To tell you in short...Tidal bore is a phenomenon that happens on the Shubenacadie river every day. It's when the outflowing rivers start flowing back upstream as the tide comes in from the ocean. As the sort of crash into each other, they create waves thus making it super fun if you have a motorized raft. So we didn't have our phones with us for the journey, but here is a picture at the end.

We wore clothes and shoes that could get muddy and stained. We did get to around the river all over and got splashed quite a bit but not nearly as much as we could have done if the tide were higher. Unfortunately, the whole week while we were visiting, the tide was at the lower level, so that was nothing we could have changed.

And the kids and Robert did mud sliding, which is where they climb up the muddy river banks and slide down into the river. It's crazy and messy!

Here is our stuff hanging out to dry.

The tour company provided dinner (well...hot dogs and chips and drinks) after the adventure. Here is our French speaking guide and us after we ate, changed and were ready to head back to our hotel.

And that concluded our full Day 1 in Nova Scotia.

To be continued...
