Here is what happens in our family: I receive an email or a note in kids' school binder notifying me about an event that will be happening at school. I ask Katya and Alex if they would be interested in participating. Almost always they say "yes". I am saying it just to clarify that I am not pushing them to take part in every single event that school organizes:)
Our kids are simply amazing. In fact, I should recognize that more often. I get so used to them having no issues with learning at school that I don't acknowledge that to them as much as I should.
Poetry Aloud was held at the school on June 13th. Each class chose two participants. Grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6---all were competing within their grade category.
All students had to pick a poem to memorize from the approved list of poems for each age group. Originally, only Alex wanted to participate. He picked a poem "Hide-And-Seek Shadow", read it two times and recited it. I was impressed! A couple of days later, the teacher, who was in charge of the competition, informed us that Kindergarten students do not usually compete in Poetry Aloud. Nevertheless, Alex really wanted to "perform" and after listening to Alex, Ms. Winstead decided to let him recite his poem, but not as part of competition--just for entertainment:)
When Katya heard about that, her fierce competitive spirit somehow reappeared and she memorized a poem called "Cats and Dogs", declaring that she will want to participate in Poetry Aloud as well. Later, she was chosen by her class to be one of the two students to represent their 2nd grade.
Well, enough talking. Here are the videos of Katya and Alex reciting their poems.
One brave Kindergartner
Although, Katya and Alex did not win a medal, they definitely did a great job. I know next year, they will try even harder as they will know exactly what to expect...and Alex can actually compete.
Alex fits right in with all the 2nd graders:)
