EPIC!! Garmisch trip!! by the numbers
1 house. This is where the Watsons stayed, 2.5 miles from Edelweiss resort where everyone else stayed. We were on the top floor. 3 bedrooms, 1 living room, 1 kitchen, 1 dining area, and 2 1/2 baths. No not 2 and a half bathrooms, I mean two half-bathrooms. Shower was in one and toilet was in the other. Together two halves make a whole. 1 evening in the dark because I accidentally hit the light fixture on the ceiling, blowing the fuse to the entire apartment, and we had to wait a few hours for the landlord to come home because the fusebox was in her apartment downstairs.
12 adults; 20 children. Not in this picture, because one 4-year-old child (unbeknownst to everyone else in the group) wandered off and was found socializing with some strangers 20 feet away. As tempting as it was to attempt a retake of the group photo, we opted against it. His parents can photoshop him in later.
6 miles. 6 running friends. 1 amazing Bavarian view.
1 Neuschwanstein Castle. Inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella palace. The guy who owned it died before it was finished oh so many years ago. Still cool to see.
1 very sturdy, yet slightly wobbly bridge over a 45m waterfall. Nearly 50 tourists on the bridge at one time.
1 picture of a picture. It did not snow while we were there.
4 beautiful people and 1bald guy.
2 awesome boys raising the roof on the big big bridge.
A lot: the number of mountain peaks and trees in the breathtaking view from our favorite wobbly bridge.
1: the number of pictures I took while in the castle. Not allowed to photograph anything inside the castle itself, but I was given permission to take a picture through the window of Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge), which we were standing on previously admiring the view.
3: the number of minutes I spend trying to remember what the name of this church was. Don’t get me wrong, it was absolutely amazing inside.
The artwork on the walls and ceiling were enchanting to see. I just sat in one of the pews and stared up at the ceiling, trying to take everything in.
Like this shot of the ceiling.
2: the number of rides we each took on the Alpine slide (except Lyana – she donated her second one to charity, ie Emily).
1 random goat on the roof. Photo captured from the sled on its way up the hill.
1km – length of slide.
30 mph – top speed (I think)
100 mph (top speed the kids thought)
1 handbrake. Not used by the children.
2 passengers on this sled. One is happy. One is deliriously happy.
a small Bavarian village with lots and lots and lots of cool shops.
This is the village famous for its woodwork, like nativity sets and clocks.
We bought 1 cuckoo clock, but only after we left, got a VAT form, then returned the next day. We really wanted that clock and we wanted it tax-free.
1 impossible word to remember: zugspitze. That’s the name of the tall mountain in the picture. 50: amount in Euros per person to take the cable car. 0 – the chance we had of seeing anything from the top due to the fog, so we didn’t even try. 250: amount in Euros we saved.
Instead, had picnic lunch at army garrison next door. Everyone pitched in food to share (some intentionally, some not). Good times for all. Later, for dinner, got Subway.
11:21 PM: what time it is right now as I’m writing this post and I need to go to bed. But there is so much to say still because this was absolutely and EPIC reunion. I didn’t even get into the German food we ate at that one amazing restaurant that Doug found (always a good idea to go to a German restaurant with friends who can speak German). And the pizza (I think we had twice). And the kids hanging out together, catching up, acting like siblings, watching movies in the Alleys’ and Farnsworths’ rooms, the waitress trying to guess which guy belongs to which wife and getting them all mixed up, . . .)
6 wonderful ladies, friends, sisters in almost every way.
1 OB doc, 1 pilot, 3 dentists, and a physician walk into a room . . .
all joking aside, I am so glad we went on this trip. We will miss you all . . . again, but all the more reason for EMRE part II.
Rob
