Alex Turns Seven!

*** Post written in mid Aug. I am long overdue for a post devoted entirely to Alex. He celebrated his birthday three weeks ago but with all the travel we’ve been doing, I have been obviously too busy to recap his special day. Alex turned seven this year. We knew that right on his birthday we’d be moving out of our house, cleaning it out and checking into the hotel, but we still wanted to make him feel special. About a week before his birthday, Robert and I took him out for a special dinner at Karinba, Chinese restaurant that Alex chose.  It was very unusual for him to be just with his parents and no siblings to compete; it also felt amazing to us. It was very peaceful and fun. Here is our “almost seven year old”.

Alex could not believe that we’d let him have green soda… (although we all ended up sharing it)

Do we look alike?

Nope, not really (besides matching green shirts).
It was so wonderful to talk to Alex alone about anything that interested him…pretty much every conversation turned one way or another into a geography conversation. It was funny. We hope to continue this tradition of taking one child at a time for some personal time with parents at least before his or her birthday.
On July 27th, Alex’s actual birthday, we all got up early and opened gifts. Alex finally got a Bakugan from a Japanese store

a whole bunch of books and coloring books about storms, wonders of the world, etc.

Apparently, astronomy is not something he loves—this is a very popular book for kids about astronomy but he was not very interested in reading it through and through.

Oh yes, a coloring book about snakes—that was a big hit.

A Lego game from Robert, although we are not sure if we like it since we had to mail it to England before we had a chance to play it.

And finally, the BIG heavy present.

Wooden building blocks—definitely a hit.

I must say that Alex has definitely improved the way he reacts to presents he does not like. It used to be that he’d be very vocal if he received something not interesting to him, but possibly after years (and many family home evenings) of practicing he is getting better.
After our crazy busy morning and afternoon, it was time to actually celebrate. Alex invited his friend, John, to go bowling with us in the evening.

Alex and John have become really-really good friends over this summer. They were all part of “the club” that they build with Katya and John’s sister. At some point, Alex was giving John “geography lessons” when they played outside. It was hilarious. Alex misses John a lot….he talks about him every day, which makes us all miss our Misawa days.

Well, bowling was not the end of our celebration. I told you many times about what a wonderful bunch of friends we have in Misawa. Because we were in the middle of moving, John’s family hosted a great big dinner.  My other friend made a cake for Alex, and not just a simple plain cake. It was a cake in a shape of a tsunami.

We all know that tsunami is not a laughing matter, but considering how much Alex loves natural disasters and the fact that we all lived in Misawa, tsunami cake was a brilliant idea! Alex loved it!

Happy 7th Birthday, Alex!

We are so blessed to have Alex as our son. It is hard to believe that he is only seven because of how much older he looks and how much he knows about the world. I must add that many times he does act a certain way to remind us that he is indeed only seven-haha. Alex is very kind and smart. He is very brave and social, never afraid to act like himself. He adores Mark and loves to cuddle with me. He reads books all the time and actually gets in trouble for not paying attention because he keeps reading a book. He loves beyblades and riding bikes, snakes and storms, he loves wearing pull-on pants and church suits. He loves playing Wii but would much rather watch a documentary about hurricanes than any cartoon. He builds cities out of magna blocks and wooden blocks every day only to destroy them in a special way (we are not allowed to destroy them because it’s not the way they are supposed to be destroyed, according to him).

Alex is extremely excited to have his own room in England (hopefully) and meet new friends at a new school. He is my early riser that is full of energy the moment he wakes up—we love it (especially now that he can get his own breakfast and just sit quietly in the living room and read a book).  The list could go on for pages, there is much good to say about Alex.
We love you!!!

P.S. We are flying out to England tomorrow morning.
