Sand Dollar Beach

Finally! The weather warmed up to 70s last week! Shocking…I know. Misawa weather is a bit moody lately. We have sea fog rolling in every single afternoon. It’s warm, it’s cold, it’s drizzly…who knows? I am still hoping for some hot muggy days before we move though... and then we’ll get rid of our fans.

Last week, my friend organized a play date at a very little known beach called Sand Dollar Beach among the Americans. The instructions were as follows: Turn left out of the main gate, go to a T-intersection with 338, follow that road for 10 miles (although our cars show distance only in km), you’ll see a blue bridge. Immediately after the bridge, turn right onto a gravel road.

We found the turn without any problems, but let me tell you….a gravel ONE WAY road that is about 1 km long, through bushes and trees, was not my favorite place to be. I had five kids in the car who squeaked with every bump I hit or branches that scraped my side view mirrors. I was going slowly…and hoping that there would be no car coming towards me! What would I do? Back out of that road for half a kilometer? haha So, we got to the coast just fine. And then I realized there is no real place to turn around! Oh, you should have seen me trying to figure out how to turn around on a skinny road that was on top of the hill …that went out into the ocean…as part of the beach with wave breakers…I give up. I don’t know how to explain what the road was like so here is a picture below that might give you an idea. Those cars are parked where we were parked and it was almost impossible to squeeze in pass each other. Phew….anyway. My friend had to guide me in my turning around efforts so that I wouldn’t fall off that hill.

And that road continued into the ocean….here are the wave breakers.
This place was beautiful!!! The weather was perfect. The water was still super chilly for me, but the kids didn’t care.
We had lots of friends with us that day, just having fun at the cold Pacific ocean.

Mark and his buddies—Marie, Keaton and Chase. Chase moved a couple of days ago, so I had to answer many questions from Mark about why Chase is not going to be at his birthday party (in December).
Big kids—Katya, Alex, Abbie and John were playing their own games.  Boys were trying to see if they were strong enough to withstand the waves with their arms folded (or something).

And girls were goofing around with the floaties.

Water looks beautiful and inviting..but so cold.

Alex and John.
“We are so cool!”
Sand Dollar Beach indeed had many sand dollars. Kids collected a few. The further inland you go, the more trash you see….not sure why they cannot keep their coastline cleaner. I think the reason that no one really cleans up these beaches is that they are all technically non-swimming beaches, so they don’t care as much about them. The undercurrent along the coast of Northern Tohoku is very dangerous, so we are not allowed to actually swim at these places. Hopefully, we’ll get to visit Miss Veedol Beach this month…it is much cleaner and is all fixed from the tsunami damage.
Good night for now. We are going camping tomorrow morning. Will be gone for three days!
Happy 4th of July, everyone!
