On that same day we attended Rokkasho Salmon Festival, our base was hosting annual Japan Day from 10 till 4 pm. We were torn about what to do! Our first year here, we really loved participating in all the activities showcases by the Japanese, so we wanted to go again. And catching that slippery salmon was a must as well. So we decided to do both! After Rokkasho, I dropped off Robert and the kids at the Colocated Club on base while I drove home to take a shower and clean up all the traces of ocean smells off me.
The kids went straight to the “dress up in kimono” area. Katya and Alex really enjoyed putting on kimonos.
Alex’s facial expressions crack me up sometimes!
Japanese Katya.
Mark, on the other hand, was just a peaceful observer.
Katya really wanted to see a flower arrangement done. This is the station where this old Japanese lady was showing her how to arrange some flowers and greenery.
Balloon station was a big hit! It always has a long line, but this year we decided to wait and get fun shaped balloons.
Alex got a funky hat
This is a cool station where kids were able to make clay drawings in Japanese manner.
And lastly, Katya and Alex made and decorated plastic kites…they lasted about 10 minutes. Oh, and instead of a permanent marker, Alex used erasable ones, so his picture was smeared within minutes…so sad.
We are not sure when the next Japan Day is going to happen. This year’s Japan day was originally scheduled for April, but was postponed because all the uncertainties on base after the earthquake. Possibly, we’ll be able to attend another one in April 2012, but we don’t know.
Good night for now.
