Costa Rica: Kayaking and Rainforest Tour

While in the Dominical area we were able to book two great tours--mangrove kayaking tour and a rainforest tour.

The first tour was about a 15 minute drive from our village. It was a Hacienda Baru tour with Freddy.
To be completely honest, I had really high expectations for this tour and what we were going to see. For some reason, everything I ever pictured about Costa Rica was sloths and monkeys in the trees EVERYWHERE. This picture was taken when we were all ready to walk and look for sloths.

This picture was taken after an hour of walking and looking for animals.

For some reason it was hard to find many animals. We learned a ton about ants and sloths and birds and monkeys but we only saw a couple of sloths, from afar. It was definitely very pretty and peaceful, don’t get me wrong. I just think I had too high of expectations to be satisfied. Freddy, the tour guide, was very knowledgable and professional, so I can’t blame him for my unmet expectations.😆

At the very end we got a picture of this mysterious rare baby bear--kinkajou, or honey bear. It’s kind of crazy to see picture of him like that. At first Freddy thought it was a sloth but he definitely doesn’t have sloths’ paws.

This is not a sloth.

One of the great attractions--iguanas at the parking lot.

Our second tour was a kayaking tour.
The kayaking tour lasted all morning with an early departure from the village. We had to follow the tour van for another 15 min or so and then arrived to the launch spot after seeing a bunch of monkeys and sloths on the way. In fact, we saw more monkeys here than we did at our Rainforest tour! Who knew we didn’t have to pay a fortune to see sloths--here we found two just along the road!

Kayaking was very relaxing and tame. It was great to see the other side of nature, with the ocean just steps away.

We had one paddle board and four kayaks, just to mix things up.

A beautiful view in one of the water alleys.

We also paddled to the ocean and took a little break on the beach. Mark, the master paddler.

At some point, Alex and I put on the mosquito nets as we were swarmed by them.

Alex is very sensitive to bug bites... we will always remember Japan and his spider bite...

Amazing mangrove trees.

The fruit spread at the end was fantastic! The best tasting fresh fruit ever!

And a family picture at the end--proof that everyone survived and had a great time!

And this is the last of my Costa Rica posts. What an adventure! We saw so much! Ate so much! And experienced the magic of another family vacation. I am glad we managed to do it in the midst of all the pandemic and restrictions (and complexities of filling out pre-departure forms and getting travel insurance).
