Relative Pitch

At any given moment you can hear piano playing in my house lately. At least one of the pianos:) We bought Alex his really nice digital piano for Christmas and he is putting it to great use. One of the things he has been asking us to do is let him go sit at a busy mall and play music to collect money in a hat so that he could buy a ticket back to England. And he is being serious:) Well, we haven't quite figured out yet how to do it but what we have found is an open mic type of event for kids that happens from time to time in Durham, organized by a woman who loves to perform herself but wants to give an opportunity to kids under 18 to show what they've got.

The event is called Relative Pitch. It is held at the Blue Note Grill (with some yummy Southern BBQ on the side) at 4-5 pm. Katya invited her friend Geoffrey to come watch Alex.

They have a proper entertainment stage, the whole atmosphere is very relaxed and enjoyable.

Alex performed Elton John's "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road".

And then since they had time he performed the second time "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars.

He was invited by the organizer to come back to their main "show" sometime in the fall, so she said to start thinking about what songs could be on his program.

This is definitely something Alex loves to do. He turned to me after his performance and said, "This is the type of thing I have been talking about this whole time. This is where I feel so great!". I guess we'll be going back to the Blue Note Grill in May:)
