Holland: Keuken “What”?

WELCOME TO KEUKENHOF!!  If you like tulips (and flowers in general) then this is THE stop for you.  Tulip season in Holland is a huge event, and the most famous place to witness the annual blooming is Keukenhof.

Keukenhof has SHOES!!!

I think technically they are called ‘clogs’.

I also found out that Dutch people don’t really wear them much anymore.  Something about ‘limited arch support’.

And so the flower pictures begin.

Wait, that’s a turkey!!

Much better.  Can’t tell you how many takes to get this shot.  No, really, I can’t tell you; I don’t remember.

Oh happy tulip day . . .

and more tulips.

Those used to be colorful tulip fields, but the flowers were all picked already, so just imagine how pretty it must have been the week before.

My little orthodontic daughter.  So cute.

Yes, Holland has real working windmills, though this one’s just for show now.  It was fun meeting up with our friends and spending the day with them.  We would love to vacation with them again.

This is a better example of the oceans of tulips you  would normally see around Holland this time of year (April).

Holland also has hollow logs.  Who knew?

We had a great time at Keukenhof.  I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got there, and even though I am as far from a horticulturist as the earth is from Kolob, it was still a fantastic cultural experience.  There was plenty for the kids to see and do (petting zoo, look at flowers, a giant maze, look at flowers, splash in the fountain, look at flowers, play near the flowers, don’t walk on the flowers, look at more flowers) that they never really got bored.  It’s a bit of must-see if you ever visit Holland in April.  Probably not worth it any other time of year.
And I’ll leave you with this beautiful smiling couple.
