The title isn't quite accurate. These houses are not actually made from gingerbread -- they're graham crackers glued together with royal icing. They do look like houses, though.
A couple weeks ago, some friends of ours who are HUGE Christmas tradition people (I say that with an affectionate tone, somewhat jealous, tone) organized a group gingerbread (aye, graham cracker) house decorating family home evening. Ms. B. built all the houses beforehand, which saved a ton of time, so all we had to do was decorate.
And the kids were off and running as soon as the first bag of candy was opened.
With no rules except "have fun", the kids showed their decorating skills.
Even Mark, who turns 3 tomorrow, knew what to do (I'm talking about the candy in his mouth, because ultimately, that's where most of it went).
See what I mean?
Not sure what this guy's thinking right now. I know what I'm thinking -- let me eat those fudge-striped cookies. They're my favorite. I put two on my house just so I could take them home with me and "enjoy" them later.
I think this is Lyana's creation. Sorry sweetie, but I can't tell exactly -- I don't remember.
And here is the completed gingerbread/graham cracker village in all its non-eaten glory. (See that fudge-striped cookie? Yeah, that one was gone within a day, and it wasn't me that took it. What they didn't know was there was another one hidden on the other side, out-of-reach from prying munchkin hands.)
The picturesque village you see here lasted less than a week, picked apart mercilessly by sweet-toothed savages. The image of the battle-scarred village was too gruesome to display here, so you'll just have to imagine the carnage -- missing windows, shattered roofs, lost doorways. You get the idea. Mark my words, however, we will rebuild!
