Ummmm, so it’s August already. And Alex’s birthday was on July 27th…And the crazy thing is that his birthday party was in the middle of June.
See, when you are in the military and your birthday is in the middle of summer, you are pretty much guaranteed to have very few friends to celebrate with. Summer is an official PCS (permanent change of station) season (i.e. crazy time).
Alex has a friend, Lorenzo, who was turning 6 two weeks before Alex. So Lorenzo’s mom and I (Lyana) decided to throw them a double party early, right after school gets out—on June 17th. We rented the Red Barn at the Weasel’s Den (our base indoor playground), ordered some pizzas
and invited some friends.
What do boys who are turning 6 like these days? Star Wars! That’s right--Star Wars, although Alex hasn’t seen all of the movies yet.
Lorenzo’s mom’s friend made us two fabulous cakes.
Alex wanted a Yoda cake:)
Looks kind of funny:) Oh, it was delicious!! One of the best cakes I’ve ever tasted…but this girl who made it (who just graduated high school and wants to be a professional cake baker) didn’t want to reveal her secret….
My not so little Alex. You may notice he is wearing the same outfit to this birthday party as for last year’s birthday celebration. This soccer uniform is from Ukraine—he LOVES it. Let’s just hope he doesn’t wear it next year too.
Alex was trying really hard not to blow out his candles ahead of time:)
Happy Alex and happy mama.
Mark was trying to figure out what is going on. He is wearing his bright orange “Ukrainian Power” shirt as always, because it’s so easy to spot him while he is running around the playground.
Unfortunately, Tato wasn’t able to be at the birthday party. Although we have specifically chosen the date and time so that he could be there to celebrate and to help with all the kids, military exercises didn’t end when we predicted, so Robert was stuck at work, sitting around doing nothing and not allowed to leave.
Nevertheless, we had fun. Katya is trying to break the “Death Star” (soccer ball pinada painted gray).
And then something extraordinary happened:
My friend’s friend made an appearance, dressed up for the occasion:) The kids loved it.
I am so happy we were able to celebrate Alex’s birthday with all of his closest friends. Three of these friends have moved already. Alex misses them dearly, but such is life of a military child.
Happy Birthday, Alex!!!
May the force be with you! (sorry, couldn’t resist that one)
Looks like a great birthday party! What a fun surprise.
