Chi Mu Mu: You Think You Can Sing?

"Can I sign up for this?", Katya asked me as soon as she came home from school one day. She was showing me a picture of the advertisement for a Talent Show that she'd snapped with her phone. It was a Talent Show organized by the Chi Mu Mu Chapter here in the UK, part of the Omega Phi Phi Fraternity Inc. What? You've never heard of the Omega Phi Phi Fraternity?

Neither have we until that day. But anyway...it sounded like fun. Students from RAF Lakenheath and RAF Alconbury were invited, ages 12-18 (middle and high school students). Although Robert was going to be in NC that Saturday of the Talent Show, we decided she could still participate, so we contacted the organizers.

Katya picked the song she wanted to sing very much again--"Popular" from "Wicked". It might be getting old, so she knows she needs to learn new songs, but she wanted to have a confident performance this time after not getting through to the next level in OpenMic UK.

Nine students competed on the day. Katya was the only one from RAF Alconbury and the only one who was still in middle school. A few participants sang, a few played the piano, one danced and one did a theater monologue. Their performances were recorded, but also judges had to pick top four from this round right on that day. Their performances would then be combined with the Talent Show from the Birmingham chapter of the fraternity to pick the top three. Out of those top three, one would be chosen to go to Vegas to perform together with other winners from all other chapters in the states.

And here for a moment, Katya's performance:) The first few seconds the mic wasn't on, so I started recording but then had to stop. This is ALMOST from the beginning.

These are all the participants.

To be honest, I wasn't surprised that Katya got picked to be one of the top four!:) The girl next to her was the monologue girl, and on the other side, one girl played the piano (meh, if you ask me) and the other girl sang "Stitches" accompanying herself with the guitar (which is awesome, of course, but not when you have to have music in front of you and kind of look for words). Anyway...I wish there were more competition, that's all;)

Katya did indeed a great job and was a delight to watch:)

What's even more exciting is that a week ago we got an email from the organizers saying that she was picked to be one of the Top Three from this chapter! That means that she gets a monetary prize (we don't know yet which place she got) and a chance to be picked to be flown to Vegas. So in a couple of days, Robert and Katya are going back to RAF Lakenheath for a fancy dinner and an awards ceremony where they will tell us more. Whatever the outcome, it's been a fun and exciting chance to perform in front of the audience again:) Well done, Katrusia!
