Our December Festivities

We tried to keep December under control this year....hahaha.
Well, actually we did a good job. Although every weekend had events, we managed to spend a lot of time as a family as well as attend a few parties.

First of all, Robert's dental party was another big hit this year. He has a wonderful group of people working for him, so it's so fun to watch them interact with each other outside of the office.

Two doctors and their female staff:))

Mike, Sherrie and us.

Mark, home alone, was given the privilege to put on the final star on the Christmas tree. If you ask him if he is enjoying being the only child, he'll say--yes. But deep down I know he wishes he had his siblings around.

Grandpa and Linda sent us a blanket with a picture of the beautiful lake in Montana.

Mark and I got to travel to Florence...South Carolina, for another tennis tournament. He played doubles with Connor whose birthday was that weekend too. This was the tournament that had so much rain delay that we left and then Mark withdrew from the doubles match (which never happens so Connor was not super happy with him...he got over it).

We usually now stay at the Hyatt hotel in downtown Florence (because it's free with points). The town was so festively decorated again! We love it!

I think this reindeer reappears every year in the same spot.

Alex got home for Christmas. It was SO good to see him again!

We did go on a few Sunday walks together.

And here is our Sunday picture right around New Years Eve.

Braces for Alex!

Never thought that it was going to happen, actually, but Alex got braces in early December!

We took the mandatory BEFORE picture. And now he is a walking advertisement for Bovenizer and Baker who are kind enough to do his braces (and Katya’s Invisalign).

AFTER: And this is an hour later!

Yes, it was an adjustment for a few days, but he’s doing much better now! He is supposed to have them for about 18 months, so hopefully, before his 17th birthday he’ll get them off to reveal an even more brilliant smile! Again, grateful to Bovenizer and Baker for making this possible!

Double Trouble

January 1, 2020 marked a new day in my life and professional career.  This is Rob, by the way, or as my wife calls me, Dr. Watson.  Yes, of course she has to call me Dr. Watson at home!  What’s the point of getting a doctorate degree if you don’t use it? (I”m writing this blog, so she can’t argue it.).

So, back to the story.  The first day of the year (technically for tax purposes it was the second day because the 1st was a holiday), TWO very important things happened.  One, I became a business owner and joined with Dr. Bass to form “Bass and Watson Family Dental”!!!!!  The sign sort of gave that away.  I’m not going to point out that I am using a hammer to pretend to put up a sign that has no nails.

The second thing that happened was . . . I took out a business loan for, let’s say, a lot of dinero.  But hey, I’m still smiling.  See . . . it’s true, that’s a real smile.

Here’s me and my proud partner, Dr. Bass.  I have told him and many others how blessed I feel to be part of this practice and that he invited me to join with him.  I have to say he works hard to make sure I feel like an equal partner and I do not want to let him down.

We polish up pretty nicely too.  I tell ya, this is one duo you don’t want to mess with.  Actually, this is one duo you should meet because together we are the nicest, bestest, most awesomest dental partnership you’ll ever find ‘round these here parts. So keep smiling y’all, and come on by Bass and Watson Family Dental in Apex, North Carolina!

Christmas Work Party

Christmas season was indeed full of parties and festive events this year because Robert had like THREE work Christmas parties to attend. I got to go to two of them--the one for the partners/associates party and another one for the people who work at their Cary location. I love to dress up and love to eat out, plus I do love going out with Robert, so I am always up for more parties:)

Here is a fun line up of our previous years' party shots:

2006 (It was actually the U of M Dental Ball)

2011

2012 (wait, what?:))

And here is a picture of Robert with his coworkers at the Cary office. Unfortunately, it's a bit dark.

A New Path

This post was a difficult to write.

It's hard to convey all the many feelings we have been feeling for the past few months in preparation to our major life changes. We were keeping it kind of under wraps in social media about what we had decided to do come this August. After eight years of Air Force life, we have made a decision to change our life course and separate from the military. I won't go into all the many details of our reasoning and thinking, mostly because there are dozens of pros and dozens of cons that we had been weighing in our minds in order to achieve a final decision. It's draining to recap. It's also some of those things with which you feel like it should be a very easy decision if you know it's right but then you doubt yourself and try to figure out if indeed it's your fear or what that stands in your way of a peaceful feeling.

I'll cut straight to the chase. Late last November, when we were pretty sure that we wanted to join the civilian life, we called up one of our acquaintances-dentists who separated from the AF a year or so prior, moved from RAF LAkenheath with his three friends-dentists and bought a couple of practices in NC. It turned out they needed an associate as their practices were growing and offered Robert to come out to NC and see the area and the office for himself. And that's what Robert did in February. He didn't only see this one friend and his practices, he also visited a few other places and drove around to figure out what this area is like. I am talking about Apex/Cary area near the Research Triangle.

Upon return, after much thinking and praying, we made the final decision to agree to their offer. And then things just started to roll faster and faster and faster--packing out, travel plans, looking for houses, schools, etc. All the crazy details that come with moving that I don't even want to rehash once they are done and finished:)

I am writing this post much later--two months later actually and the feelings are still quite raw. I am looking at these pictures of Robert receiving his awards from his commander Colonel Venth, and seeing him in his uniform, remembering all the kind words about him...and I am sad. I am missing that recognition in a military sense of that word, I am missing being a wife of an officer, and I am missing the camaraderie that we had in the military.

Well done, Robert!

And then I remember all the WHY's we chose the new path. The freedom of choice in so many things, the dreams that we still have to fulfill and Robert's passion for actually treating patients and not doing admin work remind me it will all be worth it.

I feel like after living in a new place for two months our family experiences the true feeling of how much we miss what we had, and how difficult it is to adjust to the new things. This shall pass. I hope.

For now I will look at Robert saluting his boss and think about how awesome it was to see him being saluted at the entrance gate to the base:)) I know it's a silly thing and really wasn't a big deal, but it felt awesome:))

And here is Major Watson with his boss (and friend) Major Tholstrom. We are so grateful for Tad for making these last two years enjoyable at work:)

We all came to the good bye ceremony. Kids were so proud of their dad.

I love all the British and American flags.

You want to see something funny?:)) That's us eleven years prior, when Robert was sworn in to the US Air Force in Minneapolis, MN (I was super sick and pregnant with Alex).

Here is Tad, Robert and Jason--the famous trio of RAF Alconbury dental clinic:)

And here is the special display he received as his parting gift. Robert was the last dentist who was still in England and who had worked at both RAF Upwood (before it closed) and at RAF Alconbury. Those are the patches from both bases.

We'll forever be grateful for the US Air Force. It has definitely shaped our life for the better and has given us so much more than just cool places to live. We know we have been blessed and will never forget that.

But right now, it's time to look forward towards the new horizons.

A New Dentist In Town

One time Dr. Watson went to the thrift store on base with the kids and bought a wig for the upcoming party.  We think it suits him well but for some reason he doesn't want to wear it to work.

Just wait till this summer, lots of changes are coming his way...

Dental Stuff

It's kind of cool to stop by our clinic on base, if you ask me. Usually, if I am there for any reason, with kids or without, I go upstairs to the dental clinic as well to say "hi" to my favorite dentist. When we have regular doctor appointments, I send the kids upstairs (those who are not having an appointment) to watch a movie in the dental waiting room which they think is the best thing ever.

Sometime in July, Mark had another real dental appointment. Robert had to finish putting sealants on him. I think it's fantastic that Mark still thinks that going to the dentist is like a special treat!

That is NOT the case with me. On our recent visit to Lakenheath, I had a dental appointment with our friend from dental school who is now an oral surgeon. It was not a very pleasant kind of visit although it was just an evaluation one, not even a procedure or anything.

Katya came with me as it was in June after school was out, so she was snapping away all sorts of pictures capturing a different view of a dental treatment room-hahaha.

Although we talk about teeth a lot in our family, I still don't like anything relating to teeth because of all sorts of dental issues I've had in my life. At the moment, I am just counting my blessings that all dental care is free for spouses and children of people stationed overseas.

I must say goodnight now...or I'll be having dental nightmares tonight:)

Newly-baked Major Watson

“Major Watson”…I guess it does have a good ring to it. Although we still all prefer “Captain Watson” around here. A big shout out to Robert this month for completing his first six years as active duty Air Force. Wow! Cannot believe it’s been that long since he graduated dental school. At the same time I cannot believe that we have done so much in the last six years!
The promotion ceremony was pretty low key, held at the clinic’s conference room on May 16, 2014.

And of course, kids got to help.

By the way, thanks to my friend, Vanessa Shockley, I got some great pictures from the ceremony. Like this one.

And one of my favorites right here.

Congratulations, Major Watson! We are very proud of you!

And then the big surprise!!!
IMG_2368
My friend Mallory made this brilliant cake! It didn’t only look good, but tasted heavenly as well!

Amazing detail!

Well, I wanted to make a big deal out of Robert’s promotion, because, who am I kidding, we really don’t know if he’ll ever get promoted again in the AF-haha. We decided to serve a lunch with a dental flare. So everything we made had a funny “dental name”
For example, here was our Rinsing Station.
IMG_2218
And these were our Cavity Cookies.

A few other fun names included Get-A-Mint Garlic Bites and Job Security Dessert.
IMG_2953
All in all, this turned out to be a a fun lunch that Robert loved!
On the following night, Robert and I went out to celebrate at the Chinese place in nearby village of Godmanchester.
IMG_2270
We invited a few of our friends to come along with us. And it turned out to be a fantastic night!
IMG_2272
The weather was perfect for an after-dinner walk by the river. And we even managed to snap a group picture. So grateful we had such a good company to help us celebrate!

Cheers,
Lyana.
