OBX (The Outer Banks)

I am writing this post late...very late. In fact, it's been almost a year! I am sitting here wearing my warm fuzzy socks and fleece pants looking outside where it's really cold as far as March weather goes in NC--only 40F. I was checking out what blog posts I have sitting on my "to write" shelf and found this one! A GEM of a post if you really think of it--a shiny, glistening in the sun, kind of gem.

OBX-The Outer Banks was this mysterious place that everyone talked about and urged us to go. So we planned a short trip here during the Memorial Day weekend. The timing was fantastic since my mom was still here and we could show her this beautiful place as well.

We stayed in a town called Rodanthe. I loved it! It's the place where "Nights in Rodanthe" movie is set. The location is perfect--just about 30 minutes from the busy Kitty Hawk and Nag's Head and a short drive south to Hatteras, the epitome of a secluded sleepy village.

Our condo was steps from the beach so we spent a lot of time playing in the water.

Only because we had so much time to spare, the kids actually enjoyed getting their pictures taken.

For these fifteen minutes they liked each other.

When we were tired of the beach, we drove along the thin strip of land to Bodie Lighthouse.

Amazing sky and we are the worst synchronized jumpers ever!

We also visited the Wright Brothers Memorial and Mark got to "fly" with the famous Wrights on the playground.

If you have never read the book "The Wright Brothers" by David McCullough, I highly recommend it.

At the end of the beautiful day we stopped at Jockey's Ridge State Park (free) which is the tallest active sand dune system in Eastern United States. We had a blast!!!

It's an awesome place to experiment with your kite flying abilities.

And your running up and down sand dunes abilities. Mark is left behind by these crazy teenagers.

My little ray of sunshine with his new "evil" smile-haha.

This was definitely Katya's and Mark's favorite. No one got injured, thankfully.

Yay! Our happy windy selfie! Fantastic times.

The following day we visited the Hatteras Lighthouse (and even went up to the top!).

Oh yeah, here is a view from the top. Amazing to see the Outer Banks from this vantage point.

Nearby, we visited a tiny-tiny gravesite of a couple of British Sailors from the WWII era.

Oh yes, and one more awesome site--the original house from "Nights in Rodanthe" movie. It was for sale;)

Well, and this is what a real vacation looks like. Pure relaxation with fantastic sound effects and smells. What else could we wish for?

Well, Mark wished for shrimp. His vacation was not complete without some weird fresh seafood. So we got it. Lots of it. And everyone besides Robert loved it:)

The Outer Banks is a must visit place. Although the beach is not that much different from our favorite Topsail, the atmosphere on the islands is just a bit magical. We liked it! And will have to go back.

Lyana.
